Josh Hill and Ivan Tedesco put their new Yamaha YZ450Fs on the podium in second and third at the fifth round of the 2010 AMA Supercross series in San Diego, Ca. on Saturday night, Feb. 6. With series points leader Ryan Dungey falling and finishing only sixth, Hill’s perseverance in the muddiest conditions of the year moved him to within four points of the championship lead with 12 rounds left to go in the season, while Tedesco advanced to fifth in the standings. As exciting as the main event was, the Lites West race was equally dramatic as 16-year-old English rookie Max Anstie impressively worked his way up to second with a series of daring jumps aboard his YZ250F before a last-lap bobble relegated him to fourth.
Supercross... Winter storms dumped inches of rain on San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium for the event, shortening practice and resulting in deep ruts and slick mud. In the premier 450 class, L&M Racing’s Hill won his heat race, with Valli Motorsports’ Tedesco following in second. Shortly after the gate dropped for the 20-lap main event, a first-turn pileup involving Dungey and Ryan Villopoto handed Nick Wey the holeshot, although he was soon chased down by eventual winner Davi Millsaps as Tedesco and Hill battled toward the front from their top-six starts. The Yamaha duo took over second and third places when Andrew Short crashed hard on lap 18, with Hill forging ahead of Tedesco a lap later to claim the runner-up spot.
In all, new YZ450s claimed five of the top 10 positions, with Justin Brayton finishing fifth for Joe Gibbs Racing, Grant Langston coming in eighth for J Law Racing, and Kyle Chisholm taking 10th for Moto Concepts Yamaha. Quickly emerging as a master of consistency this year, Hill’s second place finish was his fourth straight podium of the season, but he acknowledged there’s room for improvement yet. “I rode too tentative that whole race until the end, then just put on a late charge,” he admitted afterwards. Though for his part, Tedesco was happy to claim his first spot on the box this season. “It’s good to be up here on the podium and I hope I can keep the ball rolling,” he said.
Yamaha racers found additional off-road success over the weekend as Charlie Mullins, Paul Whibley and Cory MacDonald finished 1-2-3 in the SETRA regional Hare Scrambles in Abbeville, So. Carolina. Mullins and MacDonald were on YZ450Fs while Whibley split the middle in his first race on a WR450F. Meanwhile in ATV racing, Thomas Brown went 3-3 in World ATV MX competition in Cahuilla Creek, Calif. aboard his YFZ450R. Thanks guys!
