Aboard his potent YFZ450R, Wienen Motorsports’ Chad Wienen belted out perfect 1-1 moto performances to take his second consecutive overall win in the 2012 AMA Pro ATV championship at Muddy Creek Raceway In Blountville, Tenn. on Saturday, April 21. Besides adding maximum points to his championship lead in the series, Wienen also gets to carry the red number plate reserved for the points leader as the series heads into the next of 10 rounds. In the same event, Yamaha’s Thomas Brown put in 5-6 finishes after getting tagged and spun around in both motos.
Wild weather made for challenging conditions at the AMA Pro ATV event, with cloudy skies delivering a downpour near the end of the first moto. At this point Wienen trailed leader and rival John Natalie, but the combination of the YFZ’s versatile handling and Maxxis race tires let Wienen pick lines that other riders couldn’t use. While Natalie railed an outside berm on the final lap, Wienen simply squared it off and dove under him for the win. Moto two gated under clearing skies, and with track conditions back to normal, Wienen started inside the top three, worked his way forward and took over the lead on lap three, easily managing the gap for the win. “‘Because of how well everything on the YFZ was working, I didn’t even have to push it too hard,” Wienen admitted. “This felt like it was an easy win!” Yamaha ATV racing coordinator Donnie Luce added, “Sweeping both motos in this series is a huge accomplishment, and it’s apparent that Chad and the YFZ450R make a good combination.”
