Yamaha riders rode brilliantly in difficult Hurricane Irene conditions at Moto-X 338 in Southwick, MA. on Saturday, Aug. 27. Leading the charge was Gareth Swanepoel, who won the first Lites moto on his Yamaha YZ250F – an important first AMA outdoor moto win for Star Racing and himself – while also breaking the competition’s monopoly on Lites wins this season. Swanepoel also grabbed an overall podium finish for the day. Meanwhile Justin Brayton took fourth in the premier class on his Joe Gibbs Racing YZ450F, while Jessica Patterson overcame problems in the first Women’s moto to win the second moto outright aboard another Star Racing YZ250F.

Drenching rain made the first motos at Southwick a muddy, sloppy mess. But the horrible conditions seemed to motivate Swanepoel, who nearly tasted victory at Unadilla last weekend. But this time he put it all together and brought home the win after leading 11 of 16 laps in the first Lites race. Following up with a fifth in moto two put the South African on the Lites podium in third overall. “I was glad to see Star Racing finally get their first moto win in the outdoor series, along with a podium overall finish, in truly difficult conditions,” said Yamaha motocross manager Jim Perry. “All their hard work has finally paid off.” Congratulations also to Brayton for his 7-3 moto finishes in the 450 class and to Patterson for taking her seventh moto win of the year in the WMX class.
