The Nelson Report
Round 3 - 5/24/09
Glen Helen Raceway
Devore, CA
Round three of the Yamaha/ITP Quadcross series was held the day after the opening round of the AMA Outdoor Motocross series at Glen Helen. The track was very similar, following the same layout with only the back section cut off to shorten lap times. Many of the two wheeled riders had commented about the track being rougher than any they had seen in years and not much changed as most of the bumps made by the motorcycles came back early in the day and only got bigger as the racing wore on.
Moto One: Sage Baker rocketed off the gate came through turn one with the lead. I got pinched off and rounded the first turn battling for 7th. With many fast riders ahead I knew it would be important to make quick passes and get up front ASAP. I had a little help when Justin Noss made a small mistake through the sand section on lap one and let Romain Couprie and myself get by. Later that lap while leading, Baker cased a very sketchy downhill double and missed the following corner to save himself from crashing, giving me another position. Lap two I was able to get by Couprie and set my sights on Jason Dunkleberger in second. After eating a good bit of roost from Dunk’s YFZ-R I was able to make the pass on a rough downhill. Out front since lap one, Jeremie Warnia had about a four second lead. Warnia made a big mistake and climbed a berm, letting me close the gap. I felt like I had a good chance at taking the lead when I made a couple mistakes of my own letting him pull away again. At the finish Warnia took the win with myself in second, Dunk third, Couprie fourth and Baker fifth.
Moto Two: My #94 YFZ-R pulled me a great holeshot with Baker second and Warnia third. It got a little exciting when we crested the hill entering the track as I caught a bump a little funny and had a big swap in front of the entire Pro field. My YFZ-R pulled me out of it and I was able to hold onto the lead. Warnia quickly made his way around Baker for second. I decided not to jump the sketchy downhill double in the second moto. My shoulder is still sore shoulder from a crash a couple weeks ago and wasn’t feeling like it would hold up. Warnia used this to his advantage and jumped past me on the third lap. I tried to stay close enough to pressure him into a mistake but with him jumping the double and me choosing not to, I couldn’t stay close for long. Somewhere along the line Baker had bike trouble and Couprie made his way to third. When the checkers flew it was Warnia with the win, myself in second, Couprie in third with Noss fourth and Beau Baron battling his way from a near last place start to fifth.
Round three of the Yamaha/ITP Quadcross series was a tough one. The track was brutally rough with much different bumps than we are used to on quad-only weekends. I am looking forward to our first night race of the year at Speedworld MX Park in Surprise, AZ on June 13th. My shoulder should be strong by then and I’ve always liked the layout at Speedworld. I will finish by wishing Josh Frederick a full and speedy recovery, he’s a good racer and great guy.
