The Nelson Report
Round 4 - 6/13/09
Speedworld MX Park
Surprise, AZ
Round four of the Yamaha/ITP Quadcross series was held at Speedworld on a surprisingly mild June evening in Surprise, AZ. High temperatures of just over 90 degrees made for great racing conditions as the track held more water than in years past when temps were over 110 degrees after the sun went down. There were less pro entries at this round but this could be due to injuries to both Josh Frederick and Jason Dunkleberger as well as the tight travel schedule with the WORCS round being in Washington just six days before.
Moto One: When the gate dropped I felt slightly late leaving the concrete pad but once we hit the dirt my #94 YFZ-R pulled me to front of the pack and Jeremie Warnia and I went around the 5th gear pinned first turn side-by-side. My GYTR-powered YFZ-R earned me the edge heading into turn two. From there I focused on making fast, mistake-free laps. While Warnia was close for the first couple laps, he eventually made a mistake spinning out in a corner dropping him back to fourth. Justin Noss was quick to capitalize on Warnia’s mistake, moving into second followed by Sage Baker. While I kept a steady five-second lead, Warnia tried to make up lost time and passed Baker when a lapper slowed his progress. At the finish, I took the win followed by Noss and Warnia. Baker had a solid fourth until his bike locked up on the final lap, handing the spot to his teammate Hunter Miller. Evan Spooner rounded out the top five.
Moto Two: My #94 YFZ-R pulled me a great holeshot with Warnia and Noss close behind. I tried to repeat my Moto One performance by riding fast, mistake free laps. Warnia again made a mistake by sliding too much through a turn and taking an off-track excursion. Once again Noss was there to take advantage moving into second with Warnia rejoining in third. With a semi-comfortable four-second lead I concentrated on staying smooth and maintaining my gap. Noss was riding a good pace in second and while Warnia did close the gap, he could never get close enough to make a pass stick. When the checkers flew I took my second moto win of the night with Noss in second and Warnia coming across third with a badly smoking machine. Baker rebounded from his first moto heartbreak to finish fourth and Evan Spooner once again put in a good ride to claim fifth.
Round four of the Yamaha/ITP Quadcross series went very well for me. After two holeshots and leading every lap, I wouldn’t change a thing. Noss stepped up his pace quite a bit from the first three rounds and, with a couple mistakes by Warnia, we put Yamaha 1-2 for the first time this year. We have over a month off before the next race at Racetown 395 in July and I’m looking forward to being able to completely heal up my shoulder. Racetown is one of my favorite tracks; the dirt there can be ideal and the layouts are usually fun.
