The Nelson Report
Round 5 - 7/26/09
Racetown 395
Adelanto, CA
Round five of the Yamaha/ITP Quadcross series was held at Racetown 395 in California’s high desert. Late July made for some hot racing conditions with temperatures hovering around 106. The layout was fun with all the usual jumps, including the very large step-up on the back straight. The track was a little one-lined, making passing difficult but you could get around if you were creative and willing to try something different.
Moto One: Jeremie Warnia grabbed the holeshot as Sage Baker and myself battled for second through the second turn. I had the better line as we entered turn three and set out after Warnia. Just before the completion of the first lap I squared up a turn which set me up on the inside of the finish line rhythm section. I stayed lower off the jumps and as we crossed the finish line and made the pass for the lead. Once out front I put my head down and just cranked out fast laps, eventually accumulating a gap of twelve seconds. Unfortunately three laps before the end I experienced some mechanical issues and all my hard work was lost. Warnia would go on to win the moto followed by Justin Noss who had worked his way through the pack nicely. Jason Dunkleberger finished up with a third. I dropped all the way to eleventh at the checkers.
Moto Two: Baker grabbed the holeshot with Dunk in second and myself in third. By the second moto the Racetown track was more one-lined and very slippery in some spots, which made passing more difficult. Warnia crashed during the first lap and would be forced to play catch up for the rest of the moto. As I tried to find a way around Dunk, Baker started pulling away from us. I pressured Dunk for three or four laps before he made a small mistake and let me slip to the inside of him through a right hander. Baker had a five second lead but I was able to erase it in about a lap and a half. Almost as soon as got to Baker’s bumper he chose a rough line down a long straight and my #94 YFZ-R powered through the bumps and right past him. The track was a little tricky in the second moto so I rode slightly conservative to the finish. When we took the checkered flag I took the win with an eight second lead over Baker. Noss again worked his way through the pack for third. Noss’ 2-3 finishes were enough to give him his first Quadcross win.
Round five of the Yamaha/ITP Quadcross series was a bit of a bummer as problems in the first moto prevented me from taking the overall win, but I’m riding good and my equipment is top notch so I feel confident about being at the top of the podium at the next round. Unbelievably, with my first moto and Warnia’s misfortune in the second moto, we are tied in points after five rounds of racing. Congrats to Justin Noss for taking his first win, he works hard and put himself in a position to win. Our next round is just two weeks away at Glen Helen on August 9th.
