The Nelson Report
Round 6 - 07/09/09
Glen Helen Raceway
Devore, CA
Round six of the Yamaha/ITP Quadcross series was held at Glen Helen Raceway. A moderate August day had temperatures in the mid 90ās and the track was turned around from our previous visit, once again going in the clockwise direction.
Moto One: My #94 YFZ-R pulled hard down the long start straight and I entered the Talladega first turn with the lead followed by Jeremie Warnia and Justin Noss. In the first two laps I built a small gap over Warnia as we pulled away from the rest of the pack. My small cushion was lost when I slipped up in a left hander at the bottom of Mt. St. Helens, two laps later I put a wheel over the berm in the same corner and let Warnia slip by for the lead. His time out front was short as I squared up the next turn and took the front spot back down the next straight. Soon after Warnia made a mistake and I had pressure free, smooth sailing to the finish. At the checkers I took the win followed by Warnia, Noss, Sage Baker and Jason Dunkleberger.
Moto Two: My YFZ-R once again pulled me to a great start as Warnia and I battled side by side through the first turn. I just edged him out as we entered turn two but my line carried me to the rough, outside line up the next hill. Warnia squared up the turn and pulled past me on the smoother, inside line up the hill. For the next couple laps I stayed close to Warnia until I made a small mistake that threw me off line for an āSā turn section. I then rode one really good lap trying make up for my mistake and closed the gap back down before hitting a rut all wrong and taking an off track excursion. Warnia went on to win the moto b 5 seconds with myself in second 15 seconds ahead of Dunk, Noss and Dustin Terry.
Round six of the Yamaha/ITP Quadcross series featured some good battling but was disappointing as he came out with the overall win. It is back to training and practicing for me as I plan to pull off some more wins when we visit Speedworld for the second time this season on Saturday night September 19th.
