The Nelson Report
Round 7 - 09/19/09
Speedworld MX Park
Arizona, AZ
Round seven of the Yamaha/ITP Quadcross series was held at Speedworld MX Park, our second visit for the 09 season. The track layout was the same as our first visit, the only changes being some jump faces were reshaped. With temperatures hovering at more than 100 degrees all day, a freak rain storm moved in just before the first pro production race making for a messy first moto.
Moto One: Jeremie Warnia pulled the holeshot with Justin Noss and John Shafe close behind. I started fourth but quickly made it past Shafe and Noss to put myself in second. The mud spray was horrible and I was quickly going through my tear-offs. I tried to back off a little to save my goggles but Josh Creamer had made it to third and every time I fell back to stay out of Warnia’s roost, Creamer was there to apply pressure. By lap three of eight I was out of tear-offs and had to throw my goggles. I felt like I rode most of the remaining laps with my eyes closed, trying to limit the amount of mud in them. With just over two laps remaining Warnia made a mistake and let me close in. I was tired of getting mud roosted into my eyes so I went for an aggressive block pass and made it stick. Once in the lead I opened up a small gap and took the moto win over Warnia, Creamer, Justin Noss and Dustin Terry.
Moto Two: My #94 YFZ-R pulled me a great holeshot with Warnia and Creamer close behind. The track had dried out so the track was very fast with big berms in almost every corner. I slowly inched away from Warnia as he did the same over Creamer during the first half of the race. Just after halfway I made a mistake through a right hander knocking my hands off the bars and stalling the bike. By the time I got going Warnia had taken the lead and Creamer was all over me. In the closing laps Creamer and I closed the gap on Warnia but not enough to make a pass attempt. At the finish it was Warnia with the win, myself in second and Creamer in third followed by Noss and Nick Denoble.
Round seven of the Yamaha/ITP Quadcross series was a tough one, I definitely had the speed to win but one mistake cost me. The points battle is still very tight with two rounds to go. The next Yamaha/ITP Quadcross is at Cahuilla Creek Motocross on October 25th.
