A dramatic weekend saw Josh Herrin grab his fourth AMA Daytona SportBike win of the year and Josh Hayes take his fifth consecutive AMA Superbike pole and a podium finish at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama on June 18-19. Although difficult weather conditions and stiff competition kept the pair from achieving the same good results on both days, the Yamaha duo completed the fifth round of the series at or close to the top of the points standings in their respective classes. Hayes now leads the Superbike standings by two points over Blake Young, and Herrin is second to rival Danny Eslick by just four points in Daytona SportBike.
SuperBike... Aboard his fire-breathing YZF-R1 Superbike, Josh Hayes had a particularly demanding Barber weekend. It started fantastically, with Hayes earning the pole position once again. But a sudden rainstorm hit the area three laps into the first Superbike race on Saturday, causing the AMA to red flag the event and making teams scramble to put on treaded rain tires. Hayes slipped to third at the restart, and then fought tenaciously throughout the race, ultimately finishing fourth. But he made up for it in Sunday’s race two, dogging leader Young all race long and finishing a close second. “Saturday is the first time all year Josh has finished off the podium, but he is a pro and didn’t let it get him down,” commented Halverson. “That perseverance not only got him back onto the podium on Sunday, but it kept him in the Superbike points lead.”

Daytona SportBike... Herrin has been on a charge aboard his Monster Energy/Graves Yamaha YZF-R6 in recent weeks, winning three straight Daytona SportBike races that sent him to Barber with the championship lead. So it’s understandable his frustration at withdrawing from Saturday’s race one with a mechanical problem. However the 20-year-old Herrin has years of race experience to draw from, and he put the setback behind him for race two on Sunday, scrapping near the front of the field for the entire race, and then planning and executing a masterful last-turn pass of race leader Eslick to prevail by the slimmest of margins – just 0.022 sec. “Josh Herrin showed a lot of maturity today,” team manager Tom Halverson praised. “He rode a smart race and it paid off.”
