Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha’s Josh Hayes made a textbook AMA Superbike season even better at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, NJ, winning the pole and both races over the Sept. 8-9 weekend, with teammate Josh Herrin finishing second on Sunday. Now with 30 career Superbike wins, Hayes is third on the all-time AMA Superbike win list. But he also set new records over the weekend with his 10th consecutive race win, 13 wins during the season, and nine consecutive pole positions on his YZF-R1. With two rounds left in the series, Hayes enjoys a 98-point lead over rival Blake Young, with Herrin in third.
Hayes repeated his assault in Sunday’s race two by grabbing the holeshot over teammate Herrin, immediately opening up a narrow advantage, and then steadily building from there. While Hayes accelerated away at the front, it was Herrin who found himself in the hot seat as he held off attacks from Geoff May and Young. After the halfway point of the 23-lap race, Hayes was well in front, with Herrin luckily benefiting from a fall by May to open an advantage over his pursuers. At the flag, Hayes celebrated his 30th career Superbike win with an 8.6-second gap over his R1 teammate, while Herrin enjoyed the amazing 10th podium of his rookie Superbike year with a comfortable 8.1-second gap over Roger Hayden.
“Josh Hayes continues to rewrite the records in Superbike,” said Yamaha road-racing team manager Tom Halverson. “It's a testament to the hard work of the team and crew, in addition to Josh’s incredible work ethic. Tommy and Cameron are also in our thoughts after their crashes, and I was happy to see that Tommy was released from the hospital and is okay other than a shoulder injury.”
Just like at every event this season, a determined Hayes put his R1 solidly on the pole in Saturday qualifying, with teammate Herrin uncharacteristically back in ninth. When the race started, Hayes sprinted into a lead he would hold for the next 23 laps, ultimately taking a huge 22.2-second win over Ben Bostrom and Young. But behind him, Herrin was having one of those days that builds character after dropping downfield at the start and then having to claw his way forward. Rising to the challenge, the young Herrin moved from last into 15th by lap two, shot into the top 10 by lap eight, and then gradually picked off more riders to score a remarkable top-six finish, maintaining third in the point standings in the process.
