AMA Road Racing Aug. 14-16, 2009 | Alton, VA Results

In one of the best weekends in years for Yamaha in AMA road racing, Josh Hayes and Josh Herrin both took a pair of wins in their respective Superbike and Daytona SportBike classes at Virginia International Raceway on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 15-16, 2009. Adding to the luster was Ben Bostrom, who grabbed a pair of podiums in Superbike, and Tommy Aquino, who earned a podium of his own in Sunday’s Daytona SportBike race. Hayes and Bostrom are now third and fourth in Superbike points, with Herrin and Aquino in third and seventh, respectively, in Daytona SportBike. Just one more round remains in New Jersey on Sept. 4-6.

Superbike... Hayes was blisteringly quick from the first Superbike practice onward, taking Superpole on Friday and then leading every lap of the first Superbike race on Saturday to win by a commanding 10 seconds over Mat Mladin and Bostrom. “These types of wins are few and far between except for what Mat's done the last several years," Hayes commented afterwards. "We worked really hard and we have a really good motorcycle in the R1.” Sunday’s race would prove a near carbon copy, with Hayes taking the lead from Mladin on the second of 23 laps and then building up an eventual gap of 6.8 sec. over second-place Tommy Hayden, and Bostrom following in third. “Josh was super confident about the track and his bike, and couldn’t wait to get to get out there and win it,” said Yamaha road racing team manager Tom Halverson.

Congratulations to all!

Sportbike... Herrin’s double SportBike wins aboard his Graves Motorsports YZF-R6 makes Yamaha the first manufacturer to sweep both new AMA classes on a single weekend. Saturday’s race one developed a highly competitive lead group but crash attrition meant only Herrin and rival Jason DiSalvo were positioned to win during the final laps, with Herrin forcing a breathtaking last-lap pass to win by just 0.01 sec. Honing his late-race strategy to perfection, in Sunday’s finale Herrin scythed past leader Roger Lee Hayden on the 20th of 23 laps and then powered to a nearly two-second advantage at the flag. “My Yamaha's been working really awesome and just can't thank my crew enough," Herrin said. “Josh is aggressive at the end of a race and that’s a great trait to have,” added Halverson. “On the last couple of laps when he’s coming through, nothing can stop him.”

Finally, young Josh Day led a freight train of 8 YZF-R6’s to claim the Supersport Class win and the East Coast championship title.
