AMA Road Racing Sept. 4-6, 2009 | Millville, NJ Results

Yamaha Factory Racing’s Josh Hayes and Graves Yamaha’s Josh Herrin each took double wins in their respective Superbike and Daytona SportBike classes at the final round of the AMA Superbike season in Millville, NJ on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 5-6. The outstanding result moved both riders into second place in their championships, and Herrin’s victories also gave Yamaha the inaugural Manufacturers Championship in the Daytona SportBike class. It was a weekend for the “Joshes” as Josh Day also took a win in the AMA SuperSport class on his Team E.S.P. Yamaha R6 after previously clinching the championship.

Superbike... In Saturday’s Superbike race one, retiring champion Mat Mladin and Hayes broke away from the field before Mladin fell, handing the victory to Hayes and his YZF-R1 and boosting him into second in the standings. In race two on Sunday, Hayes and Mladin once again battled at the front, only this time Tommy Hayden was involved as well. They all led the train until Hayes took over for good on the 15th of 23 laps. With Mladin suffering a gearbox problem it was ultimately Hayes by 2.25 sec. at the flag. “The Yamaha was a great bike to ride this weekend,” an ecstatic Hayes said afterwards. “I'm really proud of how the end of the season has come around.”

SportBike... In Daytona SportBike, Graves Yamaha’s Tommy Aquino led Saturday’s race one aboard his YZF-R6 and looked set for his first win when he crashed, handing the win to Herrin. In race two, a first-lap pileup derailed four riders, but Aquino got away unscathed to lead lap one. Herrin forged his way to the front by the halfway point, but his race was far from over as Jake Zemke presented a challenge in the final laps, and Herrin finally took the win by just 0.06 sec., with Aquino in third. “My Graves Yamaha crew has been working really hard all year,” Herrin said afterwards. “We came up five points shy in the championship but it's the best that we've done since I've been in AMA Pro Racing so hat's off to the entire crew."

Yamaha road-racing team manager Tom Halverson added, “Racing at this level is never easy and it takes a lot of had work and late nights – even when it looks easy from the outside. But the teams and riders became one cohesive group between Graves and Yamaha, and at the end of the year we hit our stride.”
