The Yamaha R1 and R6 finished up the 2012 AMA Superbike season in the most spectacular way possible – taking all three pole positions and then five out of six race wins in Superbike, Daytona Sportbike and Supersport at NOLA Motorsports Park in Louisiana on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 6-7. As a result, 2012 AMA Superbike champion Josh Hayes and his Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha R1 accomplished 10 poles and 16 wins for the season, and Hayes now has 33 career wins, the second highest of all time. In the final standings, Hayes won the Superbike title with teammate Josh Herrin in fourth after missing the final two races.
With family and friends in attendance and the possibility of becoming the second-most-winning AMA Superbike rider in history spurring him onward, Hayes had a laser-focus on repeating the performance on Sunday. And he did just that. When the final Superbike race of the season started, Hayes once again jumped into the lead and steadily built a gap as the pack fought it out behind him. When the checkers finally waved, Hayes had a comfortable nine-second margin over second place. “What a year it's been for the Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha team,” Hayes said. “My guys are the best." Yamaha road racing team manager Tom Halverson added, “What a way to finish an incredible season – Josh making it 16 wins in front of his family and friends, Cameron taking his seventh win of the season, and Garrett getting his mojo back to finish the season with a win after being injured at Daytona. Now we have incredible momentum in all three classes as we look forward to 2013.”

On Saturday, Hayes’ run to pole position tied the series record, an incredible accomplishment in its own right. But the best was still to come, because at the start of the race, the Mississippi native rocketed his YZF-R1 to an early lead and then built up the advantage from there, clicking off lap after blistering lap before ultimately crossing the line over 10 seconds ahead of his nearest rival after 18 laps. "I was pretty comfortable and having a lot of fun out there, and I didn’t have a single slip or slide,” Hayes remarked. "So many people I know came out here this weekend, and I really wanted to do well for them. I'm glad I was able to win the race."
