In GNCC competition in Springville, Ind. on Saturday, Team Waynesburg Yamaha’s Gabe Phillips claimed his third win in six races so far this season in the XC2 Pro Am class, accelerating him to within three points of championship leader Brandon Henthorn in the process. Yamaha’s Traci Cecco added a second in the Women’s class and Ballance Racing Yamaha’s Taylor Kiser took a third in XC1 Pro. As a result, Cecco still leads the points in the Women’s class and Kiser is now third in XC1 Pro.
As usual in the morning Women’s race, eight-time GNCC champ Cecco was right in the action on her own YFZ450R. She rocketed to the lead on the first of five long laps, at times battling wheel-to-wheel with rivals Lexie Coulter and eventual winner Angel Atwell. At the halfway point Cecco, Atwell and Coulter were separated by just 3.4 seconds after more than an hour of racing. In the end however, the rough conditions and traffic gave Atwell the chance to break free and take the checkers ahead of Cecco and Coulter. As a group, the ladies’ speed and determination put them right at the top among nearly 600 competitors in the morning race classes. And now with just two points separating Cecco and Atwell, the rivalry is sure to continue throughout the eight-month long season.
