Located on the 4,500 acre, 21-mile long Claytor Lake (from which the park was named) in the New River Valley of southwestern Virginia, Claytor Lake State Park offers a wide variety of activities for water and land enthusiasts. Easily accessible from Interstate 81, the park features the only full service marina in the state park system.

From I-64, take Northampton Blvd./U.S. 13 North (Exit 282). Go through eight lights, then turn right at the Shore Drive/U.S. 60 exit (last exit before the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel). Take a right on Shore Drive and go four and a half miles to the park entrance. For camping, turn left off U.S. 60; for cabins and visitor center, turn right (west) off U.S. 60 at the stop light and check in at contact station.

Motorboats and other small craft may be launched from the Narrows boat ramp located at the 64th Street extension in the park’s southern area. Facilities include the use of launching ramps, parking for cars and boat trailers and restrooms.

Located on the eastern shore of Virginia, this park offers recreational access to the Chesapeake Bay and the chance to explore a unique coastal habitat featuring a major flyway for migratory birds. Kiptopeke is three miles from the northern terminus of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, which has a substantial each-way toll charge, on Route 13. Turn west on Route 704; the park entrance is within a half mile. The park features a beach and lifeguarded swimming area during the summer, Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Motorboats are allowed. The new ramp has been completed and has 4.5-ft mean low water. Parking limited to 70 boat trailers.

Power boats are permitted on the Potomac River, and a boat ramp is available along with a boathouse that sells gas, ice, bait and other fishing supplies. Make sure to follow all Maryland boating regulations.

Staunton River State Park is 18 miles east of South Boston. Take U.S. 360 West to Route 344. Follow Route 344 for 10 miles to the park, located southeast of Scottsburg, Va.

Boat launching ramp is available. These facilities may not be accessible if the water level is too high or low. If your visit depends on the ability to launch your boat, please call the park in advance. Both motorized and non-motorized boats are permitted on Buggs Island Lake.

The park is on the north shore of Smith Mountain Lake in Bedford County, approximately 40 miles from both Lynchburg and Roanoke and 140 miles from Richmond. To get there, take U.S. 460 to Route 122 South to Moneta, then go east on Route 608 to White House. Next go south on Route 626 for two miles to park entrance.

Boat launching fee required for day-use public; overnight guests launch for free. There are no overnight mooring areas except in the cabin area for cabin guests only. The campers must return their boats to the campsite or overflow parking area.

Occoneechee State Park is on Virginia’s largest lake, Buggs Island Lake, also known as John H. Kerr Reservoir. Boating is available during the summer. Motorboats are allowed. Two boat launching ramps are available for access to Buggs Island Lake for both motorized and non-motorized boats.
